Soviet motor vehicle availability depended on two sources those that were produced internally and those delivered via Lend-Lease from the US, UK or Canada. The Soviet Union had a combination of internally produced trucks such as the ZIS-5 (Russian: ЗИС-5) and its many variants; ZIS-6, ZIS-8, ZIS-10, and the GAZ-AA and its variants.

Additionally other motor vehicles such as tractors, passenger vehicles, utility vehicles, and motorcycles. A total of 265,600 army trucks were produced by the Soviets during the war years. Additionally, the Soviets received approximately 200,000 Studebaker-US6 out of a total of 637,000 other military vehicles (ordnance carriers, jeeps, trucks, etc.) supplied through Lend-Lease. The Soviets averaged 422,580 available noncombat motor vehicles during the war years ranging from 272,600 in 1941 to 621,300 in 1945.

Note 1: Availability does not equal number produced during the year. How to calculate: Number available on Jan1 of a given year = number available on Jan 1 of the preceding year + number received in the preceding year – number loss in the preceding year.

Note 2: 1941 availability numbers are as of the eve of the German invasion, June 22, 1941. All other availability numbers were as of January 1 of each of the following years.

Motor Vehicles

Trucks

The Soviet Union relied heavily on motor vehicles for the transportation of personnel, weapons, and supplies. While combat vehicles such as tanks and armored cars often receive the most attention, noncombat motor vehicles played a crucial role in supporting Soviet military operations.

The Soviet Union produced a wide variety of noncombat motor vehicles during the war, including trucks, buses, ambulances, and motorcycles. These vehicles were used for a variety of purposes, including the transportation of troops, supplies, and equipment, as well as for medical evacuation and other noncombat tasks.

The Soviet Union produced many noncombat motor vehicles during the war, with estimates that over 200,000 trucks were produced during the war years. Production of noncombat vehicles was a significant part of the Soviet Union’s war effort, and the country’s factories were often converted to produce vehicles and other equipment as needed.

Under the Lend-Lease program, the Soviet Union received over 400,000 trucks and other motor vehicles, which were used for a variety of noncombat purposes such as transportation of personnel, supplies, and equipment. The vehicles provided under the Lend-Lease program included a variety of types and models, such as the Dodge WC series of trucks, the Studebaker US6, and the Ford GPA amphibious vehicle.

As the war progressed, the Soviet Union made improvements to its noncombat motor vehicles to make them more durable and effective. For example, trucks were often modified with additional armor and improved suspension systems to better withstand the rigors of combat conditions. The Soviet Union also developed specialized vehicles for medical evacuation and other noncombat tasks, which helped to improve the efficiency of its military operations.

Katyusha Rocket Launchers

Trucks were often used as the platform for Katyusha rocket launchers during World War II. The Katyusha rocket launcher was a type of multiple rocket launcher that was developed by the Soviet Union and used extensively during the war. Katyusha rocket launchers were typically mounted on the back of a truck, with a series of rockets arranged in a launch frame. The rockets were fired in a salvo, with the launch frame tilting back to reduce the recoil of the rockets.

Trucks were used as the platform for Katyusha rocket launchers for several reasons. By mounting the launchers on trucks, they could be rapidly deployed to different locations and could provide mobile artillery support to ground troops. The use of trucks also allowed the Soviet Union to quickly adapt Katyusha launchers to different types of terrain, as the launchers could be mounted on a variety of truck chassis.

Noncombat motor vehicles played a crucial role in supporting Soviet military operations during the war. Without these vehicles, it would have been difficult for the Soviet Union to transport troops, supplies, and equipment to the front lines, and to evacuate wounded soldiers from the battlefield. Noncombat motor vehicles were a vital component of the Soviet Union’s military logistics and contributed significantly to the country’s eventual victory over Germany.

Tanks received the headlines and general-public fascination, but it was in non-combat motor vehicles, trucks, that the United States’ industry produced in huge volumes, 2,455,964 units. Logistics was a core US and Allied WWII strategy, and trucks were at the forefront when it came to supplying the ground-based troops. Through Lend-Lease the US supplied the Soviet Union with 152,000 trucks making up 27% of the Soviet 550,00 truck inventory. The Canadians built over 500,000 trucks during the war years. The UK produced 480,000 army trucks. Germany produced 347,490 trucks in WWII splitting them on all fronts. Japan produced 165,945 trucks. Through trucks the Allied nations were much more mobile than their Axis counterparts.

Common Truck Types

These trucks were used in a variety of roles, from transporting troops and supplies to towing artillery and other heavy equipment. Some of the most common types of military trucks produced by the United States during the war included:

CCKW – Deuce and a Half

The CCKW was a 2.5-ton 6×6 truck, nicknamed the Deuce and a Half, that was widely used for transporting troops and supplies. More than 800,000 CCKWs were produced during the war, making it one of the most common military vehicles of the conflict. One of the most famous uses of the CCKW was during the Red Ball Express operations. It had a payload capacity of up to 5,000 pounds and was equipped with a gasoline-powered engine that produced between 91 and 104 horsepower, depending on the model.

M3 Half-track

The M3 Half-track was a versatile vehicle that combined the mobility of a truck with the off-road capability of a tank. It was used for a variety of roles, including troop transport and artillery towing. More than 40,000 M3 Half-tracks were produced during the war.

GMC 6×6

The GMC 6×6 was a heavy-duty truck that was used for transporting heavy equipment and supplies. It was also used as a prime mover for artillery and other weapons systems. More than 193,000 GMC 6×6 trucks were produced during the war. It had a payload capacity of up to 10,000 pounds and was equipped with a larger gasoline-powered engine that produced between 147 and 187 horsepower, depending on the model.

Manufacturing Limitations

The production of military trucks faced several challenges. Here are some of the key challenges faced by manufacturers during the war:

Raw material shortages

The production of military trucks required large amounts of steel, rubber, and other raw materials that were in short supply during the war. As a result, manufacturers had to find ways to conserve materials and use substitutes when possible.

Labor shortages

The war effort required many workers to enlist in the military, leaving factories with a shortage of skilled labor. This forced manufacturers to find ways to train new workers quickly and efficiently.

Production capacity

The demand for military trucks was high, and manufacturers had to ramp up production quickly to meet the needs of the war effort. This required the construction of new factories and the expansion of existing ones.

Transportation challenges

The logistics of transporting raw materials and finished vehicles was a challenge during the war, as many transportation networks, especially the sea routes, were disrupted by the conflict.

Design challenges

The design of military trucks had to balance a variety of factors, including mobility, durability, and ease of maintenance. Manufacturers had to find ways to create vehicles that could operate effectively in a variety of terrain and weather conditions.

Despite these challenges, the production of military trucks was a key factor in the Allied victory in World War II. Manufacturers worked tirelessly to overcome these obstacles and produce large numbers of vehicles that played a crucial role in the outcome of the conflict.

Truck production during World War II played a pivotal role in sustaining military operations and logistical support for both the Allied nations and the Axis powers. Each nation’s production totals of trucks provide valuable insights into the scale and intensity of industrial efforts during this global conflict. The Allies out-produced the Axis at a 5.1 to one ratio. Germany relied heavily upon the rail system to transport men and materiel. However, the final mile(s) were often in horse-drawn wagons. Both Germany and the USSR used sizable horse-drawn wagons but the USSR also had many times the number of trucks to facilitate their movements and transportation.

World War II Truck Production: A Comparative Analysis

Allied Nations’ Truck Production

The Allied nations, comprising the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Soviet Union, demonstrated a remarkable commitment to truck production, reflecting their strategic imperative to equip and sustain their armed forces. The United States, with its formidable industrial capacity, emerged as a key contributor to production, particularly during the later years of the war. The United States’ significant production of trucks, especially from 1942 onwards, underscored its pivotal role in providing logistical support to the Allied forces across all theaters of war.

The United Kingdom and the Soviet Union also contributed substantially to truck production, albeit facing unique challenges and resource constraints. The United Kingdom’s production, particularly during the early years of the war, reflected its efforts to bolster its military capabilities and support its global operations. The Soviet Union, despite facing the brunt of the German invasion, managed to sustain a notable level of production, contributing to its logistical resilience and military mobility.

Axis Nations’ Truck Production

In contrast, the Axis powers, including Germany, Italy, and Japan, faced challenges in matching the production levels of the Allied nations. Germany, with its renowned industrial prowess, demonstrated a moderate capacity for truck production, particularly during the early years of the war. Italy, despite its limited industrial capacity, also contributed to truck production, albeit on a smaller scale compared to the major Allied powers.

Japan, while facing resource constraints and industrial limitations, managed to sustain a notable level of production, reflecting its efforts to support its military operations in the Asia-Pacific theater.

Lack of Trucks Compound Germany’s Logistical Issues on the Eastern Front

Germany’s military operations on the Eastern Front were significantly hampered by logistical challenges, which had far-reaching implications for the Wehrmacht’s effectiveness and sustainability in the conflict. Several key factors contributed to Germany’s logistical issues, including the lack of truck production, mismanagement of railway operations, and the impact of Soviet scorched earth tactics during the withdrawal from western Russia.

Lack of Trucks

Germany’s logistical challenges were exacerbated by the lack of sufficient truck production to support its military operations on the Eastern Front. The German army relied on a mishmash of trucks from domestic production and captured vehicles from various nations, including France, Poland, and England. This eclectic mix of vehicles, while providing some degree of mobility, lacked standardization and posed challenges in terms of maintenance, spare parts, and overall operational efficiency. The reliance on captured vehicles also introduced logistical complexities, as these vehicles were not always originally designed for German military operations. This forced the use of large-scale horse and wagon transportation akin to 1800s warfare.

Mismanagement of Railway Operations

The mismanagement of railway operations in Poland and the Soviet Union further compounded Germany’s logistical challenges. The Wehrmacht took control of railways from experienced railway professionals, leading to disruptions and inefficiencies in the transportation of troops, equipment, and supplies. The lack of planning beyond a short war also hindered Germany’s ability to optimize railway operations for sustained military campaigns. This mismanagement significantly impacted the timely and effective movement of crucial resources to the Eastern Front, contributing to logistical bottlenecks and operational constraints.

Soviet Scorched Earth Tactics

During the German withdrawal from western Russia, the Wehrmacht encountered the devastating impact of Soviet scorched earth tactics. As the Red Army retreated, it implemented a deliberate strategy of destroying infrastructure, resources, and industrial assets to deny their use to the advancing German forces. This scorched earth policy destroyed railways, depots, and logistical hubs, further impeding Germany’s ability to sustain its military operations in the region. The deliberate destruction of vital logistical infrastructure by the retreating Soviet forces significantly hampered Germany’s supply lines and operational capabilities.

Strategic Implications and Historical Context

The disparity in truck production between the Allied nations and the Axis powers had profound strategic implications during World War II. The Allies’ extensive production, particularly by the United States, enabled them to maintain a high level of logistical support and mobility, crucial for sustaining their military operations across diverse theaters of war. This significant industrial effort contributed to the Allies’ overall military effectiveness and strategic flexibility.

Conversely, the Axis powers’ limitations in truck production, particularly in comparison to the Allied nations, posed challenges in sustaining their military operations and logistical support. The disparity in industrial capacity and resource allocation ultimately impacted the overall effectiveness and sustainability of the Axis powers’ war efforts.

Legacy and Industrial Impact

The truck production totals by the Allied nations and the Axis powers during World War II offer a compelling narrative of the industrial and strategic dynamics that shaped the conflict. The substantial investments made by the Allied nations in truck production, supported by innovative industrial practices and resource mobilization, played a pivotal role in securing their logistical superiority and eventual victory in the war. In contrast, the Axis powers’ limitations in truck production reflected broader resource constraints and strategic challenges, ultimately impacting their ability to sustain a prolonged and resource-intensive conflict.

The legacy of World War II truck production continues to serve as a testament to the pivotal role of industrial capacity, resource mobilization, and strategic foresight in shaping the outcomes of global conflicts. The industrial impact of truck production during this era underscores the critical role of logistical support and mobility in determining the outcomes of large-scale military operations.

Three production items jump out in the Allies favor; 1) Allies outproduced the Axis nation in tanks and self-propelled guns by a 3.5 to 1 margin, 2) the Allies held almost a ten to one ratio in other vehicles allowing the Allies greater mobility in the field and not as reliant on railroad systems, and 3) the Allies, especially the USSR, were great believers in artillery and again outproduced the Axis nations by a ten to one ratio.

Automotive Industry Transition to Military Production

Germany’s automotive industry, led by companies like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen (which was then known as “Volkswagenwerk”), was heavily supported by the Nazi government. The government invested in infrastructure and provided subsidies to help the industry grow. German automakers also benefited from innovations in engineering and production techniques, such as the development of the assembly line. In 1936 Germany with a 4.8% market share was the world’s third largest auto manufacturer behind the United States at 77.2% and Great Britain at 7.8%.

Meanwhile, Japan’s automotive industry was still in its early stages. The government saw the industry as a key component of its efforts to modernize the country and catch up with the West. The industry was led by companies like Toyota, Nissan, and Honda, which were focused on producing small, affordable cars for the domestic market. The Japanese government also provided support for the industry, including the creation of a national research institute for automotive technology. Japanese market share did not even make it to 1%.

The United States and Great Britain transitioned their automotive industry to produce tanks, self-propelled Guns, other armored vehicles, trucks, aircraft, and dozens of other weapons and platforms. The Soviet Union as well transition their automotive sector into producing vast quantities of war materiel. In comparison to the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union, Germany and Japan’s automotive industries were not as effective in terms of producing military vehicles and equipment.

Machine Gun Production

The most commonly used machine guns during World War II were the German MG34 and MG42, the American M1919 and M2 Browning, and the Soviet DP-27 and Maxim PM1910.

Exact production numbers for machine guns during World War II can be difficult to pin down, as records and data collection were not always complete. However, here are some production estimates for machine guns by some of the major powers:

It is estimated that Germany produced around 1.2 million MG34s and MG42s combined during the war, both fired a 7.92×57mm Mauser rifle cartridge. Production numbers varied by year, with approximately 100,000 MG34s produced in 1940 and over 400,000 MG42s produced in 1944.

The United States produced large numbers of machine guns during the war. The M1919, a .30 caliber medium machine gun, was the most common model. It is estimated that the US produced around 3 million M1919s and M2 Brownings, a .50 caliber machine gun, combined. Production numbers varied by year, with approximately 400,000 M1919s produced in 1943 and 700,000 M2 Brownings produced in 1944.

The Soviet Union also produced large numbers of machine guns during the war, with the DP-27 and Maxim PM1910 being the most commonly produced models and both fired the 7.62×54mmR cartridge. It is estimated that the Soviet Union produced around 1 million DP-27s and 520,000 Maxim PM1910s. Production numbers varied by year, with approximately 120,000 DP-27s produced in 1941 and 130,000 Maxim PM1910s produced in 1942.

Great Britain produced a smaller numbers of machine guns during the war. With the Bren which fired a .303 cartridge being the most common. It is estimated that Great Britain produced around 500,000 Bren guns. Production numbers varied by year, with approximately 28,000 Bren guns produced in 1940 and 133,000 produced in 1944.

For many, their perception of the Germany Army is one of a highly mechanized force employing tanks and other motor vehicles. That perception was played up by the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda and reinforced with their early blitzkrieg victories.

Table of Contents

Germany’s Reliance on Horses

Allies and Trucks

Percentage of World Motor Vehicle Production, 1936 Data

Other Transportation Data

Germany’s Reliance on Horses

German logistics was highly reliant on horses and carts rather than motor vehicles to get materiel from railroad terminals to the front lines. Once away from a train depot approximately 80% of German logistics was horse drawn. About one in six German divisions were mechanized while the other five relied upon the foot soldier to march and the horse to pull. Even though the Soviet Union utilized more horses than Germany they utilized a far greater number of trucks, jeeps, and other motorized vehicles to transport men and materiel. Additionally, the food, materiel, and manpower Germany required to maintain their horses made these divisions less efficient and less mobile than their enemy counterparts.

Although Germany had the world’s third-largest prewar motor vehicle production capacity it did not have a true motor culture. In 1936 the ratio between US and German motor vehicle production was sixteen to one. Motor vehicles were common in the United States and young men grew up using and maintaining them. These skills would translate directly to the battlefield.

Allies and Trucks

Tanks received the headlines and general-public fascination, but it was trucks that the United States’ industry produced in huge volumes, 2,455,964 units. Logistics was a core US and Allied WWII strategy, and trucks were at the forefront when it came to supplying the ground-based troops. Through Lend Lease the US supplied the Soviet Union with 152,000 trucks making up 27% of the Soviet 550,00 truck inventory. The Canadians built over 500,000 trucks during the war years. The UK produced 480,000 army trucks.

Germany produced 347,490 trucks in WWII splitting them on all fronts. Japan produced 165,945 trucks. The Allied nations transitioned their commercial motor vehicle industrial capacity more readily to military vehicle production. The United States, Canada, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom all out produced Germany in truck production. The Allied nations were much more mobile than their Axis counterparts.

The Allied nations all had an industrial culture of mass production. The Soviet Unions’ culture was through five-years plans and centralize planning. The democracies were capitalist based and economies of scale and assembly lines were omnipresent in the auto industries. All the Axis nations had a more craftsman’s approach to manufacturing thereby never reaching the production numbers of their foes.

Germany did obtain approximately 100,000 French produced trucks during the war years. These trucks produced by a largely hostile labor force suffered from quality and reliability issues. A ‘go slow’ mentality was common at all French manufacturers during the war and sabotage was common. Axis production often relied upon small skilled teams accomplishing many production steps versus the Allied approach of repetitive tasks minimizing skill levels needed by the workforce.
